Ethical and sustainable

We’re committed to doing business in a way that respects our environment, the people we work with, and the communities we serve.

Ethical business

We aim to make a positive contribution to society, both here and further afield, and we only do business with people who share our commitment to improving the world we live in.

Committed to ethical trading

We’re proud to be the only food company in the UK’s health and social care sector to be a Member of the Ethical Trading Initiative (ETI), a leading alliance of companies, trade unions and NGOs that promotes respect for workers' rights around the globe. All of our new suppliers operate within Ethical Trading Initiatives.

Giving back to our communities

In the space of two years, with the help of our staff, we’ve raised £80,000 for Alzheimer’s Support and Alzheimer’s Society. We also support our communities through the apetito Staff Foundation, which gives financial support to the charitable causes of our staff and their children. Since 2005 we’ve contributed over £175,000 to these charities

Sustainable business

Since 2007, we’ve been developing one of the UK’s most sustainable production and distribution system so that we can limit our impact on the environment. No part of our business escapes scrutiny.

Reducing energy consumption

We’re proud of the reductions we’ve made in our energy consumption, including:

  • Carbon: 45%
  • Electricity: 37%
  • Water: 36%
  • Diesel: 33%.
These figures relate to each meal produced.

Reducing food waste

We’ve reduced our food waste by 60% (6700 tonnes of CO2), with zero food waste sent to landfill. All food waste is sent to our anaerobic digestion partners. We are also Courtauld 2025 signatories, a voluntary agreement to improve the sustainability of the food and drink industry. It commits us to 20% reduction in food and drink waste, and 20% reduction in greenhouse gases produced for UK consumption of food and drink.

Green initiatives

Our returnable crate system has removed 1.2 million cardboard boxes each year from our business. And we’re proud of our efforts to reduce the environmental impact at our Trowbridge site, with the installation of solar panels and a wildlife corridor.
