Devoted employee honoured after 55 years

Mr Gerrish, 84, started at the catering business before present owners apetito were even formed.  He worked in the motor department at the former Mid Wilts Creamery, and then Waldens Wiltshire Foods until 1989. He was then asked to come back as a groundsman.

Yesterday Dennis completed his 55th year in the job and he was the guest of honour at a special lunch and awards presentation.  He said at the presentation yesterday: “What can I say? It’s the best firm I have worked for and I have worked with the best people.”

He was presented with a leather bound photo album containing images of him at the business and at his celebratory meal on Tuesday evening. He was also given a long service award cheque for £1,100 and a bouquet.

Mr Gerrish, of Furlong Gardens in Trowbridge said: “I will be giving the flowers to my wife Betty, she is quite a floral person.”

Chief executive of apetito Paul Freeston made the presentation, saying: “This company has made huge progress over the past few years – it’s all about team work. The success of the company is a reflection of everyone in this business.

“Dennis is part of the company. We are all proud to have him as part of the business. It’s great we are able to keep him doing something he loves.”

Long Service PresentationOther members of staff were also honoured at the celebratory meal, including 23 employees who have been at the company for 10 years, 11 who have achieved 15 years, 10 who have gained 20 years and one, Robert Pickett, who has reached 40 years.

Lord Lieutenant of Wiltshire John Bush attended the award ceremony.

He said: “This is an absolutely wonderful record Dennis has achieved. A whole lifetime given to one company is a tremendous effort. Congratulations to all of you. I’m very proud within Wiltshire to have you as one of the principal employers.”
