apetito Signs Up To Historic Environmental Commitment

New release date:2008-02-20
Abstract:Local frozen foods manufacturer apetito last week signed an historic agreement to improve their water efficiency and thereby reduce water use.

Along with 20 other of the UK's leading food and drink manufacturers such as Nestle, Warburton’s and Mars, apetito has pledged to:

  • 1.       Develop a 2007 baseline of water use;
  • 2.     Assess water use at each manufacturing site;
  • 3.      Develop site specific action plans;
  • 4.     Deliver against action plans
  • 5.     Provide annual progress reports on water and cost savings.

Under the Federation House Commitment, which was jointly developed by the Food and Drink Federation and resource efficiency experts Envirowise, apetito of Canal Road, Trowbridge intends to lead the way in reducing water usage by cutting it’s usage by 5% in 2008. This bodes well for the company meeting and exceeding the food industry standard target to reduce water used outside of that embedded in products themselves, by 20% by 2020 when compared to 2007 levels.

Working with Envirowise through the Federation House Commitment, apetito will review their current water use and develop  action plans to significantly cut water consumption and costs within six months of signing up to the commitment. They will report annually to Envirowise on water and cost savings made on site, whilst in return Envirowise will offer apetito a package of support measures to help in reducing the company’s water usage.

Paul Freeston, apetito’s Chief Executive commented on the reasoning behind the company’s decision to sign up to reduce its water usage. “It’s easy to take water for granted – but it is a scarce & finite resource.  It also requires energy and resources to collect, purify, distribute and clean up again after we’ve used it. As part of our sustainability strategy, apetito is delighted to work with FDF and Envirowise to focus on delivering a substantial reduction in water usage.”
