Staff Foundation
The Staff Foundation was launched late in 2005 for the benefit of organisations you or your immediate family are involved with; to qualify the organisation must be a ‘good cause'.
Already it has distributed £44,000 in support of 104 projects. Here we highlight some of the latest organisations and people to benefit from being awarded a grant.
Helping ‘man's best friend'
Sheila Madeley, Customer Services, WFF has supported the work of Bath Cats & Dogs home for some years and, when she heard the staff talk about rising costs and the challenges of fund-raising, she decided to apply for a grant from the Staff Foundation. She was thrilled to hear that £500 had been awarded, which will be spent on new kennels.
Sheila said 'We're so pleased this money has been awarded, it will make a difference. Bath Cats & Dogs Home is in desperate need not only of financial support, but bedding, food, toys, etc. Help with dog walking is always appreciated and, of course, they have cats and dogs of all ages and sizes looking for homes, and rabbits and guinea pigs, too. There are lots of ways that people can help.'
African joy
Catering Consultant Robyn Vine's story of how a bright idea aimed at helping those less fortunate than us grew into a registered charity, African Joy, which has helped hundreds of people across Africa and is truly inspirational.
In short, African Joy was started by a group of people, including Robyn, who wanted to really make a difference to the lives of children and poor communities in Africa. They do this in a very simple way - by collecting second hand goods in the UK to recycle and ship out in containers to Africa, where they make a huge contribution to peoples' lives.
apetito's Staff Foundation has shown its support for African Joy by awarding a grant of £500.
Music lessons are a bit more technical these days!!
The Foundation helped to purchase MP3 Players for the music section in the school library of Apperley & Deerhurst School.
It's a new section where the children are learning to transfer music from MP3 onto the computer.
Tiny Tots Pre-School bookcase
Karen Rose, Team Leader at Pie site nominated Tiny Tots Pre-School, Holt to receive £500 for a reading corner. With limited space they needed a folding bookcase, which the Foundation grant allowed them to buy.
Gold Award Winners
The Cygnet Group (7-16 yrs) of the Trowbridge branch won gold at the national exhibition of British Sugarcraft Guild with their ‘ugly bug' decoration. It's a group of 17 children, including one boy, who meet monthly on a Saturday morning to learn the skills of sugarcraft. Denise Bishop (Staff Restaurant) said ‘It's good to see the skills being taken on into the next generation'. The grant from Staff Foundation has allowed extra equipment to be purchased so all the children can work at the same time instead of in rotation.
Rugby Tour to Ayr
With the support of the Foundation, Paul Howell was able to include 2 underprivileged boys on the tour to Ayr.
Two grants for Young people
Claudine Farrer is the Learning & Development Co-ordinator, based at Trowbridge, and has received two awards for projects to help young people.
The first award was for £450 for the First Trowbridge Scout Group. Claudine's 11 year old son Joshua is a member and she regularly helps the group, particularly with camp trips. The group needed a separate cook tent to keep the preparation of food separate from where food was eaten. Claudine applied for a grant to buy the cook tent, and was thrilled to hear that an award had been agreed.
Claudine is also a supporter of Trowbridge's New Town Primary School, where both Joshua and her other son, 9 year old Daniel, are pupils. They have an ambitious plan to create a ‘secret garden' on a plot of land by the school. This will be used as a quiet area for story-telling and listening and also for little plays and drama events in fine weather. The school needed to raise £500 for suitable seating for this area so, again, Claudine picked up her pen and filled in a grant application form. She commented: ‘It was really easy to do, and I'm delighted that both of my pet projects have benefited'
